Long time, no write! My day job has kept me quite busy but I’m back with a quick post about a table runner that I made for my friend’s wedding. The runner is made from silk dupioni. I was going to finish the raw edges with a narrow hem but given the length of the runner, this proved to be too difficult. Instead I used a narrow overcasting stitch to finish the edges. The thread color was similar to the fabric. Its silky color gave the stitching a nice shiny finish.
Of course, the project did not get completed with a hitch. My main problem was that I kept running out of thread but I couldn’t find the same thread so I ended up using two different threads. The first was a Mettler cotton thread with a silky finish. The second was a polyester thread also with a silky finish. What I found was that the polyester thread led to some tunneling of the fabric while there were no such problems with the cotton thread. If I make another table runner with silk, I will be sticking with the Mettler cotton thread.
As usual, pressing the fabric made everything look so much better.
